Deep Learning already lets you talk to the voice assistant on your smartphone and hides the clutter behind you during video calls. Now, Deep Learning is also making its way into IoT devices, changing what we think of as a “sensor”. Could this be the “iPhone moment” that propels IoT into ubiquity?

One of the visions for 5G is to make the Internet of Things a reality. By putting billions of connected devices out into the real world, sensing and acting on our behalf, we…

We are living in an era of growing interest around the fuzzy concept of «Artificial Intelligence» and related ideas such as «Machine Learning» and «Big Data». This surge has been mostly driven by emerging computational power, clever designed and scalable algorithms, data availability and new models capable of delivering systems with human-level (or close to) capabilities in a set of complex tasks in natural language processing, computer vision, automatic control and automatic decision making. As researchers, students and industrials we are attracted to these ideas because of the big questions…

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and related variations have significantly impacted the areas of image processing and computer vision. Amazing performances, superior to human capability, have been achieved in several tasks (e.g. object detection and classification) with affordable computational complexity.

The main price is paid in terms of the huge amount of labeled data needed for training. While for some specific scenario satisfactory datasets may be easily available, in general this is not always the case. Building datasets for some scenarios of interest may be severely challenging due to the intrinsic…

Accurate control of crane loads is important in offshore operations, especially when the ship is exposed to waves. Also, automatic crane control can help inexperienced crane operators to regain control of the crane load. A requirement for automatic control of cranes is the tracking of the crane load position.

High accuracy tracking of the crane load position can be achieved using computer vision. In addition to the visual tracking of crane loads, the same models and methods have applications in the manufacturing industry. The automatic loading and unloading of produced…

Artificial intelligence is one of the many buzzwords heard in entrepreneurship circles these days. Even though the technology has been around for over 50 years, it has recently been brought to the attention of many aspiring entrepreneurs.

The startup Vis-Tek is based at NTNU School of Entrepreneurship (NSE) in Trondheim. Vis-Tek is using artificial intelligence to give drivers an overview of free parking spots. Using deep neural networks to process CCTV cameras, their technology can detect cars at specific parking spots, making it possible to know whether the parking lot…
